Louis Recchia
Artist's Statement
Recchia's iconic images come primarily from pop culture, classical art, and nostalgic childhood memories.  He combines different eras, styles, and techniques with unexpected juxtapositions.
"They get jumbled around in my brain and come out through my painting," he says.
"I feel if they have some significance to me, they will resonate with other people as well."

Bio
Born in 1949 in Chicago, IL, Louis Recchia aspired since boyhood to become an artist.  He was influenced and inspired by the art he viewed at the Art Institute and Chicago's Phyllis Kind Gallery.

After earning a B.A. in Art from Western Illinois University in 1971, he married Zoa Ace (also an artist) and moved to Colorado.  At the University of Colorado in Boulder he obtained  an  M.A. in Sociology.  His field work for the degree had him living and working on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in Wounded Knee, South Dakota setting up an art center for the local youth.

During the 1970's he began showing his artwork in Denver and Chicago galleries.  His first public showing was at the Aspen Art Museum in an exhibit juried by Jasper Johns.

Eventually Recchia caught the eye of  the Denver Art Museum's contemporary curator, Dianne Vanderlip.  This lead to displays of his work at the museum, and a major museum purchase in 1988.

Since then Louis has shown extensively in galleries and museums throughout the U.S., and is included in numerous public & private collections.

The artist and his wife live in northern Colorado.  Their son and daughter are both (currently) college students.
