John Guider - Paris Series
The Paris Series / 1995
John Guider began these photographs with 35mm black and white film, which he transferred to 8 x 10 Polaroid negatives, enlarged those negatives by hand on large 100% cotton rag paper, and added his own painterly touch to that particular image. Then he enlarged that painted photograph, cutting it to the shape of his full frame image and printing it in larger sizes.
This series was produced in 1995, just at the beginning of significant technical and aesthetic changes in the world of photography. John’s work was then, and continues to be, on the leading edge of new ways of combining the handmade traditional aspects of photography with technological changes.
The effect John was after is the effect he achieved—namely, to give photography the status and presence of painting. This series reflects his interest in combining photography and painting, using hands-on processes in the making of the final images.
