Artist Statement
close Artist Statement
I am a child and a product of the Sixties who has had the good fortune of a successful, thirty-year career as a creative professional and artist. My work is influenced by the music, message and events of that generation: Love is the most powerful force in the universe. All my work represents a journey in understanding the infinite meanings and manifestations of that statement. Every one of my images in some way reflects that belief. Visually, I include as the formal elements of my work the rich hues of the Baroque and their unflinching adherence to the Dramatic Moment, or the inverted perspectives of Cubism, or the renegade spirit of Modernism. On transcendent days I may even slip into the soft world of the Impressionists, and on bad days my political beliefs infiltrate the work, but always there is the quest for love and the Divine Source of Love. As an artist and as a man I make this statement: Love is the answer. The world comes to me through color, in all its inherent and sometimes savage beauty.I am under the constant assault of color: its harmonics, its emotion, and its psychology. Color is never true or stable, yet it is spiritual. We bring our life stories to the interpretation of color, with what is immediately cognizant and that which is ancient and inherited.Color is the content of creation, filling in the framework of the world. It is melodrama. It can be dark and mysterious, pale and gaunt, bright and gaudy. Color is language. It speaks in a symbolic and metaphorical tongue.Color is the monologue of my artwork, whispering or shouting its intention from a place hidden in plain view.
